Home Based Business – What Kind is Right For You?

What type of home-based business is right for you? Many people think they want a home-based business when what they are really looking for is a home-based job. What’s the difference? Let’s take a look and see. There are a lot of opportunities on the internet to get paid working for others. Most of these are freelance type positions, although you can also manage to land a position with regular tasks, steady hours and steady pay. Some work-at-home opportunities even offer benefits, such as healthcare. The main difference is, in a home-based job, you are still working for someone else. You still have to meet their deadlines, there isn’t quite as much flexibility, but there is less risk involved. In a home-based business, you are truly your own boss and answer to no one but yourself. Your paycheck is limited by the amount of time and work you are willing to invest into building your business. There are no benefits such as health, retirement, etc. unless you arrange for and purchase them out of your earnings. In a home-based job, you are given specific tasks and a time-frame in which to meet them.In a home-based business, you set your own tasks and time-frame. Do you have a family event you want to participate in tomorrow? You can do the work tonight, or after the event tomorrow, or some other day this week, or not at all. You set your tasks, and you determine your time frame. The biggest problem I see with people who think they want a home-based business is that they still have an employee mentality. They still want the benefits, they still want to do the bare minimum in order to get that paycheck, and they want some type of guarantee that they will make money. The mindset of an entrepreneur is completely different. They are a different breed for sure. A person who has a successful home-based business is content to work 1/2 a day (12 hours!) — especially at the beginning, to get their business off the ground. An entrepreneur is willing to work crazy hours and do without a lot of luxuries in order to have the time and money to invest in his future. It’s hard work to be a successful home-business entrepreneur. Don’t let anyone try to tell you differently. Those “we do all the work for you” cookie-cutter opportunities out there that you pay a monthly subscription for are just looking for your monthly payment. The truth is, that’s how they are making their money. But, their opportunity is unlikely to make you any money at all and will instead lead you down the path to debt. Can you build a business with little to no monetary cost? Yes.
